From Blue to Gold: Reimagining a Barrhaven Front Yard with AI

Deciding on a replacement tree is a permanent choice that fundamentally changes the "curb appeal" of your home. When a towering 50-foot Blue Spruce failed its pull test, the City of Ottawa’s Trees in Trust program offered a silver lining: a free replacement from a curated list of eight species.

To move past the guesswork of nursery tags, we turned to AI to visualize the future. By using a recent Google Street View image of the property, we "planted" each of the eight options digitally to see how they would interact with the home's architecture and the Barrhaven streetscape.

The Transformation: Ginkgo Biloba

Among the "Large" tree options, the Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair Tree) stood out for its unique fan-shaped leaves and legendary resilience. Below is the AI-assisted visualization of how this "living fossil" would transform the front yard compared to the original spruce.

Before: The 50' Blue Spruce

The original spruce provided year-round privacy but its dense, wide footprint dominated the front yard, eventually becoming a safety concern after failing structural stability tests.

After: The Ginkgo Biloba (AI Visualization)

The Ginkgo offers a more open, airy structure. In the summer, its unique emerald-green foliage adds a sophisticated texture. The real showstopper, however, is the autumn phase where the tree turns a brilliant, uniform gold before dropping its leaves all at once.
  • Growth Habit: Pyramidal when young, becoming broad and stately with age.
  • Benefits: Extremely resistant to pests, urban pollution, and salt—ideal for Ottawa winters.
  • Visual Impact: Adds significant vertical interest without the heavy "wall" effect of a large conifer.

Choosing Your Replacement

The Trees in Trust program currently features a mix of medium and large species tailored for our climate:

  • Medium Species: Often include options like Serviceberry or Japanese Lilac, perfect for smaller setbacks or under power lines.
  • Large Species: Include heavy hitters like Red Maple, Bur Oak, and the Ginkgo, designed to rebuild Ottawa's urban canopy.

Using AI to "test drive" these trees before they hit the ground ensures that the next 50 years of growth are exactly what you envisioned for your home.
