Abundance Huge amounts of wealth are trapped, hidden in our communities… I’m sure we all agree that there is way too much "stuff" in most communities in our western world. Unused, unwanted stuff is everywhere… just wasting away. It’s in our:
Stuff we bought with all good intentions of using; stuff we used a few times and then stashed away, out of sight; out of mind long before its useful life was ever realized; stuff way too good to send to the landfill. Our homes and living spaces are bloated with all kinds of "stuff"... massive amounts of clutter... just taking up space, valuable space that we have to pay to heat in the winter and to cool in the summer. But much of that stuff is perfectly good, usable stuff with lots of life left. It's absolutely worthless and continues to deteriorate when unused. But that stuff can get new life and add real, tangible value to our local community when we pay attention, notice it, and make a little effort to release and give back that value to our friends and neighbours who can and will put it to good use. Freecycling / Buy Nothing communities of all different flavours are popping up everywhere to help us productively and eagerly absorb and come to grips with this incredible abundance of "stuff". Facebook-mediated groups, Yahoo! Groups and other venues bring people together in coordinated, collaborative efforts to put all that idle stuff back into productive use and to add value locally, right within our communities. And the beauty is it costs nothing. It’s all free! A very beneficial side effect of these collaborative efforts is the strengthening of community spirit as local people get to meet, know, and trust each other while sharing in this very positive, useful and valuable experience. It's so good to watch community members express their joy and gratitude around sharing and giving! And adding real value to our local communities in the process. Wisdom from Gub ================== |
